Always a pleasure to hear new sounds form McDowell couple! Excellent blend of american primitivism with raga-influenced drone contemplations, greatly melodic and transcendently static at the same time. <3
Favorite track: Effigy.
Sun Cycles is the duo of Jackie and Matt McDowell. Borrowing from the tradition of acoustic drone music, It Cuts the Plow Reins utilizes both Indian and American influences. Shruti boxes and harmoniums blend with dulcimer and fiddle to create a new idea of Appalachia through an Eastern lens. While early proponents of acoustic drone like Lamonte Young come to mind, more recent incarnations such as Pelt and Spiral Joy Band are heard as well.
As the New York Times noted about Jackie McDowell's music - she utilizes "the meditative care of a private ceremony and the blurriness of hallucination". We couldn't agree more and we look forward to more ceremonies and hallucinations to come.
